Case Study: Trevor Evitts
In 2002 a struggling Wolverhampton tyre firm Goodyear suffered redundancies Trevor Evitts was one of the men affected and he was not sure what to do next. Through Jobcentre Plus he applied to join the NVQ Level 2 Gas Installation & Maintenance course.
This is an intense course delivered over 27 weeks in order to achieve certification in Core Gas Safety and working with Domestic appliances. This is certainly not for the faint hearted. After an intensive Assessment day Trevor was successful in achieving a place on the course. The CHN group took Trevor on as part of their Gas Engineer training scheme. They are strong believers in the benefits of Work Based Learning to both the individual and the employer.
`NVQs are about competence in occupational activities - they are therefore about 'real work' in 'real work situations.`
Demand for this particular Occupational area has grown rapidly and within the company it was decided to identify and seek a suitable person who would consider developing their skills as a trainer. Through his hard work and enthusiasm Trevor was identified being a potential trainer. Trevor jumped at the chance and went on to gain his A1 Assessors Award. This has been a major success for his Training provider IDSL ((Industrial development Services Ltd.)
"I was delighted to be selected and I found myself back in the classroom, this time as a Trainer. I have now also achieved my Verifiers and External Verifiers Award."
Today, Trevor continues to be an enthusiastic member of the team and is always looking at new innovative ideas and continuous professional development. He still possesses enormous energy levels and vitality with a thirst for more knowledge. He says.
"My job gives me happiness and fulfilment in helping others and there is no shortage of opportunity to use innovative ideas and develop my own skills whilst developing others."
It is only through making progress at the various levels that he finds satisfaction and the good standard of living that he now enjoys. Trevor points out
"I used transferable skills from my first job as engineering principles and logic have always appealed to me. We all have skills which we can transfer. "
Skills are fundamental to achieving our ambitions, as individuals, for our families and for our communities. They help the business and people realise their potential and therefore serve two goals of social justice and economic success. The CHN group believe.
` Trevor is an inspiration to other people encouraging them to make the progress he himself continues to make. `
